Technical SPECIFICATIONS
The World Tech Center (WTC) embodies the pinnacle of modern engineering, with technical specifications and structural improvements that ensure safety, sustainability, and resilience. Each Twin Tower features a robust 1-meter-thick central core crafted from ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), offering exceptional strength with compressive strengths exceeding 150 MPa, far surpassing traditional concrete.
The floor structure relies on A514 high-performance structural steel I-beams (1-meter web depth), clad with advanced fireproofing compounds that expand under heat to protect against fire for up to six hours—exceeding Chicago’s stringent building codes. Liquid tuned mass dampers located near the top floor, each holding 1,000 tonnes of water in steel tanks, counteract wind-induced sway and double as firefighting reservoirs, with water pumped to extensive sprinkler and foam systems across all floors. The towers’ 26 local and 12 express double-decker elevators, designed larger than typical, enhance efficiency, while four pressurized stairwells and a dedicated fire service elevator ensure rapid evacuation.
Structural innovation extends to the 1969-foot antenna tips, symbolizing the moon landing, and anti-aircraft lasers on the roofs, providing a cutting-edge defense against airborne threats. Powered by 100% renewable energy through hydrogen fuel cells and solar panels, the WTC recycles its waste and minimizes its carbon footprint, setting a new standard for sustainable large-scale infrastructure.
